Its
direct ancestor is the old Roman Molossian. Formerly scattered
all over Italy, in the recent past, the breed was only prevalent
in the Province Apulia and in the adjacent regions of Southern
Italy. His name derives from the Latin "cohors",
which means "protector, guardian of the farmyard"
The Cane Corso was in November 1997 recognized by the FCI.
Since the 50's Prof. Bonatti and Prof. Ballotta where the
initiators in the Cane Corso story. End 70's dr. Stefano
Gandolfi and the brothers Malavasi from the famous Antico
Del Cerberus kennel, started the breeding program. The three
dominant dogs they start with where: Tipsy , Brina , Dauno.
Offspring from them - Basir ,Bulan and Babak - are still
the root of the Cane Corso's of today .
A known and important place was Puglia, the important dogs that have the greatest impact on this breed from today are from Puglia and must be the most typical as they can be, dogs like PLUD and OTELLO from the kennel Del Dyrium from vito indiveri are a good example of this. Arras, Argo, Arek, Boris, Logan , Ruben etc. are all the offspring of them. In 1983 the SACC (Societa Amatori Cane Corso) was a fact. That resulted that in 1987 the first shows and meetings where organized by the ENCI. from this first show in Foggia in 1988, where 57 dogs selected that got there first (temporary) pedigree's. And where written in the black open book, the first registration was a fact. On 20 January 1994 the breed got excepted at the request of Stefano Gandolfi (SACC) with the ENCI, and the breed was official recognized. Of great importance is to know where the ricopero della razza started and how it was realized, in the way of breeding in line to get typical Cane Corso's.
